Crain's Social Media Group is a new division of Crain Communications. The team is led by Tracy Samantha Schmidt, the director of training and strategy at Crain's Social. Social media has been central to Schmidt’s career in the media and higher education. Previously, she created a nationwide social media education program for Tribune Company. In 2011, Schmidt taught more than 3,000 professionals how to use social media effectively. She also presented executive seminars for organizations including the National Association of Broadcasters and the National Association of Realtors. Schmidt is the co-creator of ChicagoNow, the Tribune's network of 350 blogs named one of "five innovative websites that could reshape the news" by Mashable and the Poynter Institute. Before joining the Tribune in 2008, Schmidt reported for Time magazine and covered the rise of social media. She has taught several graduate-level classes on social media at DePaul University. Schmidt earned her master's degree at the University of Illinois College of Media, where she is now a guest lecturer.
