Booz Buzz

Hundreds of ABM Members Already Taking Advantage of Landmark Industry Study ... Are You?

American Business Media commissioned Booz & Company to conduct a landmark industry study, entitled “A Roadmap for Profitable Revenue Growth,” exploring the most critical issues facing the ABM membership – and business information industry – today. Booz has identified two key pathways to success – one more traditional pathway built on serving the marketer, and one evolving approach which focuses on the end-user (readers, viewers, attendees).

ABM continues to deliver insights from the study to its membership through a variety of outlets. Hundreds of ABM members have already downloaded the various study reports and viewed the free members-only webcasts … Are you taking full advantage of this material?

Click here to access the webcasts on-demand. Both provide an overview of the Booz study, but one focuses on the "Marketer-Driven Solutions" roadmap while the other concentrates on the pathway for those pursuing "End User-Driven Solutions.”

Additionally, Stream57, our official streaming partner, broadcasted an overview of the study from ABM's Top Management Meeting in Chicago; members can watch the archived video on-demand here (at no cost). Also available are PowerPoint presentations of the overview and each of the two roadmaps.

If you'd like to set up a meeting with Booz consultants or ask them specific questions pertaining to your business, please contact Mark Rothman at 212.681.1106.

Shield Law to Be Re-introduced in 111th Congress

Now that the 111th Congress has begun, the "Free Flow of Information Act," or the Reporter Shield Law, is back on the radar in Washington. (The Law shields reporters from revealing sources unless the story in question was determined to be in the national security interests of the United States.)

Staff meetings with the chief Congressional supporters of last year's legislation have occurred in the last four weeks through the Shield Law Coalition and all parties have expressed excitement about the legislation's potential for passage in the new Congress. Congressional champions have indicated an ambitious six-month timetable that will be tenuous, but doable.

The primary legislative obstacles ahead of the Shield Law, or any legislation that is brought to the floor, are, among other items, the Economic Stimulus Bill, 2009 Appropriations and the many confirmation hearings that will be occurring in the opening months of Congress.

American Business Media anticipates that the Shield Law will be re-introduced by the end of the month in both the House and the Senate. Further, while it is probable that the final product will be a compromise between Congressional leaders and the new Obama Administration through the Department of Justice, the soon-to-be-reintroduced versions of the legislation will likely contain the original language from last Congress, rather than compromise language that almost passed at the end of last year. ABM's lobbying firm, Wexler & Walker, is already in the process of making calls and conducting meetings on behalf of ABM to urge co-sponsorship and will do so throughout the legislative process on this legislation.

Finally, prospects for the Shield Law got a boost last Thursday, January 15, during the confirmation hearing for Attorney General appointee, Eric Holder, when he responded positively to Chairman Patrick Leahy's question regarding the Shield bill. Holder replied that a "carefully crafted law is appropriate," and agreed to work in a bipartisan manner towards final passage. Holder concluded by saying that he is "in favor of the concept of a shield law."

InXpo CEO Gets Virtual with the ABM Video Network

These days, it’s virtually impossible to find a b-to-b tradeshow professional who isn’t wrestling with lagging event attendance and dipping sponsorship. Today, emerging technologies are allowing publishers and media companies to develop new approaches to events. Tomorrow morning on the ABM Video Network, Malcolm Lotzof, CEO of virtual event provider InXpo, sits down to talk about how his Chicago-based company integrates different technologies into one platform to provide innovative events solutions.

Virtual events aren’t new to ABM member companies, but with increased travel costs and pressures to be green-friendly, more and more b-to-b media companies are looking at how to use them to drive revenue. Most recently, the Association explored these digital venues during a panel discussion led by Kirk Laughlin of Next Coast Media at ABM’s Top Management Meeting in Chicago. Virtual events will also be on the agenda during next month’s Events Summit in New York City.

Be sure to tune in beginning at 9:00 AM EST this Wednesday morning to gain insights on how InXpo tackles the challenges of bringing different technologies together to help generate leads, increase communication and boost profits!
